Well shoot. I guess I am taking a chance here folks. After all, I could end up detained as a terrorist, dropped into jail, or just disappeared for this post. And I’m serious. After what happened to Brandon Raub this week I am quite worried about it. Not as worried as I am about the United States becoming a police state, but there it is. If you are a member of the Secret Service, FBI, CIA, Homeland Security, FEMA, Treasury, State Department, local law enforcement, or a mall security guard, here is my disclaimer. I love my country and would never take arms against it or attempt to harm any American. I am not a radical, extremist, rightest, leftist, communist, fascist, ultra-whatever, domestic terrorist. I am a guy who likes to blog. Please don’t come and beat me with night sticks before hauling me away. If I am guilty of anything it is of being a Constitutionalist and a historian. Both of those professions are rather bookish, don’t you think, please nod head and don’t send the men in the tactical combat gear. Back to Brandon Raub though.
Raub, 26, a former marine, was picked up by not just the police, but also the FBI and the Secret Service. Apparently, Raub warranted his own task force. They questioned him then detained him for psychiatric reasoning. Yeah, but they’ve still detained him. I’ve read the full text of what he posted in a Facebook closed feed. You can read it marked Source Here – Full Text at the bottom of this page. Now, since this was released by the family I don’t know if it is the only post, the tamest of all the posts, or etc. However, I would think if the U.S. is detaining someone, they would need a very convincing reason to do it other than we didn’t like that whole first amendment thing he was engaged it, looked suspicious to us.
He is apparently a 9/11 truther, which to me smacks of a little craziness, but hey if you think the government with all those people can cover up the biggest murder in the history of the country and no one said anything, not even to their loved ones, then…more power to you, but you’re dead wrong. But, again, this is America and you can be wrong and dumb and loud and that is okay. America is a place where you should be free to express your opinion, not jailed for it. But this is also the America that has seen a President sign the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which allows for indefinite detention without trial. The ACLU was quite unhappy about this.
When the ACLU released a statement they said, “The statute is particularly dangerous because it has no temporal or geographic limitations, and can be used by this and future presidents to militarily detain people captured far from any battlefield…worldwide detention authority were used to hold even a U.S. citizen detained on U.S. soil in military custody, and many in Congress now assert that the NDAA should be used in the same way again”
I worry we are getting to the point we are becoming a full police state. A place where neighbor is afraid of neighbors and will report them to the authorities. A place where speech in guarded because it can land you in jail and individualism is discouraged. I hope it never comes to that point
