Some people swear by CNN, or Headline News, or CNBC, or MSNBC; still others care for FOXNEWS or any one of the broadcast networks to get their daily dose of news. Most of us are aware the news is really just an entertainment program wrapped up with buzz words, bells, whistles, fear mongering, and partisan politics on both sides, and are there to get ratings and cash. Why exist in a capitalistic society if not to get cash? The only other reason would to be the mouthpiece of the state, or business, which ever one controls your country. I suppose you could be both. Liberals will often parrot how skewed FOXNEWS is in their reporting while quietly saying nothing about the other programs, and the reverse is true among conservatives.
When all is said, most people recognize, whether they admit to it or not, that all news channels are parroting their party line. Journalism isn’t supposed to be partisan, it is supposed to be fact based. The problem is when the facts are either not sexy enough to warrant reporting or conflict with the story the editors want told. They have an ideology they want to keep on the table and an agenda they have set. That is why the major news stations and papers have no journalistic integrity left. I can’t begin to tell you how many times these reporters and stations have been caught in lies or half-truths and then just shrugged it off with no explanation. Why explain anything? They have already done the damage with their lies and omissions. However, there seems to be one news organization left that has the integrity to report the actual news as they see it.
The Spanish-speaking Univision is not afraid to ask the hard questions and expect real answers. They aren’t afraid to go after real stories either. Jorge Ramos, a news anchor on the channel had the chance to interview the President late last month and the channel put him right on the hot seat, asking questions that just begged for real answers. Ramos started the interview with, “At the beginning of your government, you had control of both chambers of Congress, and yet you did not introduce immigration reform. And before I continue, I want for you to acknowledge that you did not keep your promise.” They, out of all the media outlets, have given hard questions, requiring real answers instead of lobbing softballs and ice cream cones to their interviewees, only to watch them bang the things out of the ballpark by giving not committal, skirting answers, that on the surface deflect the question and redirect it to their happy spot, making it look like they’ve actually nailed it….and the journalists are going right along with it.
Remember the whole Fast & Furious controversy. Do you still hear anything in the news about it? If you do, it is only for seconds right before a commercial and that is all. It turns out however, Univision, is still on top of this story and chasing it madly trying to come to some conclusion. They just reported the previously unreported murder of 14 students in 2010 in Mexico and the wounding of 12 others at the hands of Mexican hit men, using weapons illegally purchased and walked over the border in the Fast & Furious escapade. Yet, strangely, no one in the current administration wants to admit anything illegal took place, and if it did no one knew about it, and if people knew about those documents are subject to executive privilege so there you can’t see them and no one will ever know or do anything about it. Well, Univision is there digging and digging and reporting what they find, without any unnecessary spin. Looks like they may be the last bastion of journalistic integrity left.
