The United States just happens to be a member of a 56 nation Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in the larger body of the United Nations. According to their own website (www.osce.org) they are “a forum for political negotiations and decision-making in the fields of early warning, conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict rehabilitation, and puts the political will of its participating States into practice through its unique network of field missions. The OSCE has a comprehensive approach to security that encompasses politico-military, economic and environmental, and human aspects. It therefore addresses a wide range of security-related concerns, including arms control, confidence and security-building measures, human rights, national minorities, democratization, policing strategies, counter-terrorism and economic and environmental activities.”
This basically tells me they are some toothless watchdog group who routinely complains about bs in other countries to the U.N. But then again, the U.N. is 99% useless and corrupt. Now this group has been around since 1975 and has watched 6 U.S. elections. Now there have been 9 Presidential elections and 18 National elections in total since 1975, so they have viewed one-third of our elections. But, they have only been watching elections in the U.S. since 2000, which means they have witnessed all 6 elections since that time. Why is that?
I’m not really sure, but I will tell you what, there are several states who are not on board with this OSCE plan to watch the election and have uninvited them to their state and have additionally told them that interference will be met with arrest. Iowa has told them they will be arrested if they come within 300 feet of a polling place, Texas told them if they will be arrested if they are in 100 feet. Nebraska Secretary of State issued a statement saying those elections watchers would not be in the state of Nebraska. Why is this so hot button?
Well it may have something to do with the fact that for at least the last decade the Republican party, of elements thereof, have been very vocal about the amount of voter fraud, voter intimidation, and vote tampering the Democrats have been involved in and with across the U.S. (for examples see the 2012 Patrick Moran Scandal and pretty much everything uncovered by project Veritas, http://www.theprojectveritas.org/) Democrats on the other hand counter than voter identification laws harken back to the Jim Crow days of the south and are being used to disenfranchise minorities and discriminate against democrat voters. (tell me, how many less important things than voting do you need to produce an id, photo no less, to do….like a thousand). So with this amount of contentiousness the OSCE thinks they can poke around in our elections.
This might have had a different reaction had the body said, “we just want to review a best practices mentality, and there is nowhere else in the world so committed to liberty and the franchise as America, so in order for the world to meet the high standard of the OSCE we have to have a ruler by which to measure them. We would like that to be the process we witness in the United States.” That should be the way it goes, but it never is. Instead, they want us to feel like they are there to subvert voter oppression. But they are impartial, or are supposed to be and according to the Administration have full immunity regardless of state laws and may not be arrested. But, if the state doesn’t want them, aren’t there states that would welcome them, or do they want to pick where they go. I don’t know.
I think the administration has it wrong. These people might show on election day where people don’t want them. They may have full immunity as the government says. That doesn’t mean on election day these unwelcome observers won’t be detained for the duration of the election and then released because of their immunity, immunity just means they won’t be charged with a crime. I guess that NDAA thing comes and bites you in the ass sometimes there Mr. Big Government.
Foreign bodies do not tell the bastion of freedom and liberty how to conduct a fair and impartial election, the United States has been doing it for well over 200 years now.
