I was watching the early news this morning and they were talking about Hurricane Sandy of course, well actually, they were talking about the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. They were talking about the long lines for gasoline, upwards of three hours, lack of power, lack of resources, etc. There was a woman on the television with her thick New York accent who said, “we ain’t got nose food, nose water, nose gasoleen, nose ‘lectricity, when is the government coming…we’re gonna die in here, we’re gonna freeze, when is the government coming.” I thought to myself this woman is right…she is going to die. She is going to die waiting for the government to come and rescue her. She has the same mentality as those who went through Katrina did, which is, when is someone coming to save me?
Never mind that we knew about Sandy for long before hand. Never mind that there was an adequate chance to evacuate the areas that were going to be most hardest hit. Now, unlike Katrina, I will give props to the local and state governments who urged and helped people get out of the way of the storm, unlike the bumbling, near criminal ineptitude of Kathleen Blanco and Ray Nagin of Louisiana who, during Katrina, basically left thousands to die, measured somewhere between roughly 1,800-4,000 dead, by not using all the resources they had to help evacuate these people. That is probably why the death toll from Sandy has so far been limited to less than 60. I guess we’ll really know when the whole thing dies down, but I can’t see the death toll rising too far above that number. But here again is the thing. Why are these people expecting the government to come and take care of them now that the hurricane is over?
Did they not have adequate knowledge of what was going to happen? Show some personal responsibility people. You had the chance to go out in the week leading up to the storm and stock up on water, food, candles, medicine, batteries, flashlights, some gasoline, propane tanks and table top propane burner to cook food etc. to hold you over through the storm time. I am sure the CDC recommends having an emergency preparedness kit that contains at least enough food, water, and associated stuff to last you for at least two weeks, it is your own fault if you don’t have one. In fact, living in New York, if you had a two-week supply of these things, you’d probably be good right now, you’re not getting power until the 11th, no problem, you’ve got your food, batteries, a solar charger, etc, you are going to be fine.
You’re not the problem, it is the victims, those people who will do nothing for themselves, those who failed to prepare, those whose preparedness plan was always to rely on the government, these people are the problem. These people are going to suck up what resources they can and to hell with everyone else. These people are going to point at their lack of food, water, shelter, etc and blame this on the government because apparently the government is on the hook to provide for all these people.
Well I say bull. The government, the country, your local and state government…they owe you nothing. You live in the greatest country on the face of the earth. Simply by being born here you have opportunities most of the world never see. You have clean water most of the time at the turn of a faucet, you have access to food, education, shelter, air conditioning. Only in America would the poverty level be so high as to include people who own a car, have central air, cable, and cell phones. We are blessed to be here, and you couldn’t be bothered to take the time to look out after your own welfare, to make sure you had your butt covered, because, well, America should do it for you. I have news for you, the President you adore so much and the welfare state you have fostered are not going to come in riding on a snow-white charger to bring you the things you need to survive. No, FEMA will show up, once requested by the state, and mobilized by the government, to bring the mere essentials necessary for life to your area. You’ll be lucky to get some where you live begging for the government to save you.
I say it serves you right for having the gall to ask where the government is during all of this mess when you really should be saying, if I had prepared for this I wouldn’t have to bitch about the government not taking care of me.
