I don’t normally get all giddy when I see people who might be losing work or hours at work. But sometimes I can’t help it especially when these are people who are so educated they believe they have the right to tell me how I ought to live my life and preach about fairness, and social justice, and other leftist bs. I am talking about the leftist bastion that is the education system and the teachers in it. Let me give you an example
I had an assistant teacher once, who tired of my ceaseless conservative sense and the destruction of her arguments, told the entire class that most college professors were liberals or progressives because they had so much education and intelligence. The more learned you were the more likely you were to see the light and embrace the correct ideology. In other words the smart people were liberals, the dumb conservatives. I countered with the statement that perhaps the reason for their liberal nature was not the enlightenment of education, but the disconnect from real society with real jobs. They were entertaining theory in their ivory towers, never looking to see how it impacted those around them. You see in theory socialism is a wonderful form of government. In practice it has always been a failure and now we’re starting to see some of that theory turned real dig into the ivory tower of the educated and bite them in the ass. I am talking about Obamacare. Seemed wonderful on paper, then we started reading that paper and realizing, oh my we’re on the hook for serious money in taxes and not a lot of payout for that money.
A number of universities and colleges, specifically in the Northeast have told their adjunct faculty professors they will be cutting their hours to avoid the employer mandate in Obamacare. This of course is a measure designed to control costs. Most businesses have them in place to keep over head from getting out of hand. But now these liberals are starting to feel the pinch. Keep in mind that adjunct faculty usually make up about 70% of a college campus teaching staff. So not only are they being cut to part-time work, no more than 29 hours a week, they don’t get the free healthcare from their employer.
The schools are more than free to do this, they decided what professors work, they make the schedules. If they want mostly part-time employees then why not. If other businesses can do it, then so can a university. Of course, the teachers are saying no fair, this isn’t fair. After all they were the ones campaigning about the good of this and brainwashing their students into how fair this would be for everyone, so let us pressure our congress to pass a bill that they haven’t bothered to read so we can find out what wonderful things are in it. Remember all of that. Now it bites them.
Now their employers are saying, well this was all good on paper but it is turning out it might be untenable for us. Soooo, yeah, we’re going to have to cut your hours to make this all fit into the grand scheme of things. I suppose they could have also gone the other way and said, half of you will be fired, the other half will have their workload doubled with no appreciable pay raise because of the money we have to pay into the health care system…and with the hours you’ll be working now, you’ll be glad to have access to doctors.
