I can’t believe I am going to even touch this. But if I don’t I wouldn’t be able to consider myself a person of principle. That being said, I will preface this with my belief that women make excellent soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen. I have served with many of them during my time in the military and most of the time it was just like any other job. No big deal. However, I never operated in a front line combat role either.
What Leon Panetta did as he walked out the door, mandating the inclusion of women in combat, was shameful. He dropped one of the hottest potatoes of the political correctness movement to be dealt with by his successor. What a freaking mess. You have cleared women for absolute equality in the military, where formerly they were protected from certain things, just to appease the feminist agenda. This was not handled with any delicacy, no studies done, just bam, here you go. You’ve gone and screwed a generation of women and girls and you barely even know it.
Before you shame me, think about this. With absolute equality for combat roles the United States would have to, under its own logic, make all women sign up for selective service at the age of 18 and be draft eligible if it were ever re-enacted. To do anything less would be discriminatory, after all women can now fill any combat role and hence are eligible for all that entails. Maybe someone should have thought of that before opening this can of worms. Even if the country isn’t having that kind of equality, they don’t allow that in a kind of separate but equal rationalization, which didn’t hold up for the segregated south either, you still have to deal with physical standards.
Currently all services have two physical training standards, one for women and a higher one for men. Combat units only have one standard and it is even higher than the basic one set for all troops in a given service. Is this going to have a double standard for women, because I’ll tell you now, there is a vast difference in physically between a 140 lb man and a 14o lb woman of the same height. The man has the advantage of testosterone, which allows him to build larger, stronger muscles faster. So what is it going to be, same standard or double? Perhaps in the interest of political correctness there will be a double standard recognizing that women are naturally different from men, maybe they won’t relax the rigorous physical standards for combat troops. Either way women will make it through and serve on the front lines. Some will come home without legs, arms, missing eyes, disfigured or dismembered. Some will come home in a flag draped coffin, maybe to small children who cry at her funeral and don’t understand why mommy won’t come back. Some will come back with injuries you can’t see.
Have you ever met some who returned from combat? Have you ever seen a flashback? I have…it is not pretty, to watch a grown man freak out, hit the floor, go for cover, screaming. It saddens you to see someone so damaged even after so much time and counseling. Some of these things never go away, you can’t wash away experiences that are burned into your brain. Can you imagine watching a mother, wife, or a girlfriend do the same? How barbaric of our culture to treat women so wantonly that we would sign them up for PTSD, survivor guilt, other guilt, recurring nightmares, depression, a higher rate of homelessness, and suicide. It’s not like the movies. You’ve all seen the veterans living in squalid conditions, homeless, friendless, because of their internal and sometimes external scars. Now we are going to get the chance to see that with women as a country. How wonderful for us.
Maybe, just maybe after ten years of continuous war, with fewer people willing to join the military to be sent into combat, the adminstration is trying a new tack. This way they can replenish all the billets of those they’ve lost in combat and through attrition with new, less informed, less jaded personnel and expanding the body pool to include women is just the easiest way to get it done. Let’s hope that is not the case.
