In America where we seemingly have or at least had freedom we have noticed the creeping specter of government intruding deeper and deeper into our lives, both public and private, and into our pockets. Less than a hundred years ago there was no personal income tax. None whatsoever. Until 1913 customs taxes and excise taxes were the primary form of revenue into the government. There were limited forms of taxation, but those mostly occurred during and right after the Civil War to raise funds for the cost of the war. Finally, in 1913 with the passage of the sixteenth Amendment, the government was granted the power to enact a personal income tax on the people. This is where everything started to go down hill.
Now it is 2013 and the individual is taxed, and taxed, and taxed. Oh, they have seemingly good rationale for all the taxes you pay, but these are just another way to continue growing government, both local, state, and federal into the giant money sucking monster it has become. Now they are starting to enact asinine taxes, for no other reason than they want to raise money. Take the “Rain Tax” being implemented in the State of Maryland for instance.
The Chesapeake Bay is in the midst of a pollution problem, this is not a new problem but is decades old. The draconian Environmental Protection Agency decreed in 2010 that Maryland had to stop so much storm runoff from draining into the Bay, which was projected to cost the State almost $15 billion dollars. To pay for that, authorities decided to tax “impervious surfaces” or “anything that prevents rainwater from seeping into the earth (roofs, driveways, patios, sidewalks, etc.) thereby causing storm water runoff.” This will be in effect by July 1.
To compound the issue of taxation for no other reason than we want money because some government agency declared we would do something in our state, Maryland will be calculating the obligations of property owners by using satellite imagery and geographic information systems to calculate the area of roofs and driveways.
Two questions here: One, why is the EPA getting involved and why to they get to say, “you state, do this.”? The EPA is a bastion of junk science, home to environmental radicals and political zealots. They are the environmental equivalent of the inquisition, with their agents declaring the people heretics for not having the correct political and environmental opinion and sacrificing their livelihoods, economic security, American Industry and ingenuity. They would take us back to the dark ages before coal, oil, cheap energy and everything else. If anyone should be disbanded, disallowed, and taxed to death it should be they.
The second question is, why is no one protesting the double taxation this is causing? To tax the surface of a roof is to add a tax onto a house and people already pay property taxes. A tax by another name on the same thing is still a tax on that thing, it doesn’t transform the object into something new.
Basically, you have a state caving to the political pressure or a tyrannical agency, hell-bent on ending American exceptionalism, and people to sheep like to stand up and say, tax us for the weather and we will kick your ass.
We can’t control the weather, rumors of the Republican weather dominator notwithstanding, so we shouldn’t be taxed for the rain. Someone should do something, but the only thing left to do is move where there is freedom….like Texas.
