The position of Secretary of State is one of the most important and influential positions we had in the United States. You did not read that wrong, I wrote had in the past tense. Oh, it is still the fourth position in the line of Presidential succession, right after the President pro tempore of the Senate and just in front of the Secretary of the Treasury. The position still also carries the importance of being the senior official concerned with foreign affairs. But for all intents and purposes the position has been relegated to something filled with an empty suit really, a placeholder. Someone has to be the mouthpiece for his all mighty wind, and what better people to fill the job than a failed politician.
I don’t mean that John Kerry is a failed politician, what I mean is that the last two Secretaries of State have hosted losing bids for the presidency. One of them couldn’t get out of the primaries, the other couldn’t defeat a markedly disliked incumbent. These people are not statesmen, they are not judicious diplomats using their skill to enhance our foreign relations, using their silvered tongues to eke out agreements beneficial to both sides of a matter between the United States and X. Instead they are the lapdogs of the administration, idiotically engaging in demagoguery and making off-hand comments.
The Sec of State is the diplomat of the United States and can’t go around half cocked shooting off their mouth whenever they feel like it. You can’t take a loser like John Kerry, an anti-war, steeped in the party hack and send him out like he is some knight in shining armor for the country. What the hell are you thinking? Kerry isn’t fit to serve in the Senate, much less have battles of wits with people who live in countries where losing one of those battles ends your career and might land you a lengthy prison sentence.
We want someone like Kissinger. Someone who is poised, who thinks before he speaks, who through his education and experience speaks carefully and pointedly with the knowledge he is gaining the upper hand with every word. We don’t want moron boy shooting from the hip who then gets owned by Putin.
Take this as fact. Kerry’s big mouth may have halted what might have turned into a boots on the ground shooting war for the time being but it came at a great cost to the credibility of the United States. We are no longer the power in the middle east, we have taken a back seat to Russian interlocution with Syria. It remains unclear if the great one understands that American foreign policy has been ruined in the middle east in just a few days and with a few words. Putin delivered the death-blow, much like a matador against a worn out bull desperately trying to stay upright.
Here is the thing, this deal is going to end well for Syria, well for Russia, and probably bode well for Iran now that Russia is the new big brother on the horizon and the U.S. is going to get the short end of the stick. Those weapons will never see international weapons inspectors or be destroyed by the international community. Even if they are, Russia and Iran will be funneling them new toys to replace their old ones just as fast as they turn them over. Syria will not go unarmed.
If the administration had told the U.N., this is your problem, you bitch about the chemical weapons and you take care of it, we’ve got our own agenda we would have been much better off. But our President who knows nothing of leadership besides community organization was quick to threaten violence. When the Russian Bear stood up, Obama didn’t back down, but he should have doubled down on the spot (i.e. don’t fuck with us on this Putin, killing people is one thing, using WMDs is another, we’ll make this into a giant humanitarian nightmare if you get involved and throw you under the collective bus as well) Then maybe he could have saved some face. Instead he plays it cool while his Secretary of State is off prancing around and talking out of both sides of his horse face, making it look more like a horse’s ass.
Decades of foreign policy wiped off the board because one dumb-ass couldn’t keep his mouth shut or think before he spoke, diplomat my ass.
