I had to sit back this week and watch the talking heads in the media after the incident at Charlie Hebdo, I didn’t want to launch off half-assed, or knee jerk my own reaction. We already know what happened…radicals, or as I call them true believers of what Islam preaches, raided the offices of the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo and killed 12 and wounded another 10. I then watched the general reaction to this and there are a couple of things that need to be said.
You should not have to fear that satire, speech, jokes, or drawings should get you killed. France, like the United States, has a right to the Freedom of Speech in its constitution. We are defining the freedom of speech as the inherent human right (those given by right of being human rather than by government) to voice one’s opinion publicly without fear of censorship, reprisal, or punishment…and I guess now, being murdered. In fact France’s own Constitution says in Article 11: The free communication of thoughts and of opinions is one of the most precious rights of man: any citizen thus may speak, write, print freely, save [if it is necessary] to respond to the abuse of this liberty, in the cases determined by the law.
But yet there are those in the media who would rather blame those engaging in free speech rather than those engaging in the act of terrorism. Time magazine and Bruce Crumley comes to mind. He wrote: “Not only are such Islamophobic antics [as publishing cartoons] futile and childish, but they also openly beg for the very violent responses from extremists their authors claim to proudly defy in the name of common good. What common good is served by creating more division and anger, and by tempting belligerent reaction?” He went on: “Do you still think the price you paid for printing an offensive, shameful, and singularly humor-deficient parody on the logic of ‘because we can’ was so worthwhile? If so, good luck with those charcoal drawings your pages will now be featuring.” For any of you and especially Crumley I have this to say for calling for everyone to keep their mouths shut when it is seemingly inconvenient for you or other….Fuck You. Fuck You a lot.
Freedom of Speech is a tool against tyranny and oppression. To advocate for the suppression or self-censorship of the same is as bad as those killing to punish the same. Blaming those advocating ideas that everyone doesn’t agree with as the aggressors is idiocy. France, a country that gave us great thinkers like Charles de Montesquieu, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Charles Bastiat, have now given us home-grown Islamic terror that attempts to undermine the freedoms France sought to establish. Freedom of Speech isn’t about saying only what you’re told to by someone or only saying what is popular, it is about protecting rights, stimulating discourse, announcing triumph, shaming corruption, and etc…it is never about shutting up because that is now “safer” in this society. Political Correctness is the enemy of free speech and not drawing cartoons lampooning anyone is definitely politically correct.
Drawing cartoons of mohammed is not obscenity…killing someone for doing so is. We should not be rendered speechless because of this, we should respond, with more than just satirical cartoons. On to my second point.
Islam is not a religion of peace. It is an ideology that believes their “religion” (or way of life) should be the only one and they are willing, and in fact ordered, to spread that religion via the sword if others won’t convert willingly. The Koran says so in sura 47 verse 4 “When ye meet the unbelievers, smite at their necks and cause a bloodbath among them.” Insults against their religion can and should be met with death, which is why those drawing the cartoons at Charlie Hebdo were going to be attacked by Muslim “activists” as they were called by Christine Amanpour on CNN. These are not activists, these people are terrorists and there is only one thing you can do to counter their “arguments.” ISIS is not a cult, Al-Qeada is not a cult, the Taliban are not a cult…they are living embodiment of what comes with full Sharia law in a theocracy or oligarchy. You cannot reason with that kind of institutional evil…it must be rooted out wherever it is found and killed. These Islamists will offer us no discourse, no quarter, and no peace…we should offer them discourse if they lay down their arms, quarter if they surrender, and peace if they will live in harmony respecting others….since those things will never happen we need to kill them. They’ve had their chance.
The Department of State estimates that muslims, ethnic or by religion, make up roughly 10% of France’s population. After muslims make up at least 5% of the population they will work to get the ruling government to allow them to rule themselves under Sharia, or Islamic law. The ultimate goal of Islam is not to convert the world but to establish Sharia law over the entire world. (Read more: Here) France has let more that 750 “no-go” zones crop up in its own country, which are mostly hotbeds of radical Islam where it is dangerous to go if you are not a Muslim. Many of these areas are governed by Sharia Law alone and the state is unable to provide even the most basic services. We can call these Little Afghanistan or Little Iraq, but the fact is a lot of these people living in these areas aren’t second country nationals, they are Muslim French citizens who have coalesced into like-minded groups to oppress themselves under their own ideology and reject the Freedom, Democracy, and tolerance of their own country. Once this grows too large for France to handle, they will slowly come to dominate the country of France.
The government should declare radical Islam the enemy, and not just the government of France, but the government of every civilized country. Radical Islam should be rejected by moderate Muslims and they should turn in those calling for violence against any peaceful society. France should break up the 750 no-go areas. If they must disperse and displace them violently…don’t say they weren’t warned that their self-segregation would no longer be tolerated. France has the rule of law and the rule of law should be applied in France, even in the no-go areas. Those wanting to join the cause and fight for Islam should either be locked up, have their citizenship stripped and be deported, or be killed…the way that France has already hunted down and killed the brothers Kouachi for their terror attack on Charlie Hedbo.
You must stop apologizing for radical Islam, you must stop justifying their attacks as triggered by others, you must stop advocating that others not “provoke” them, and you must stop dismissing this problem as one that others will solve….for if you don’t you may find yourself living under Islam someday, whether you want to or not. We as a people loving of Freedom and Democracy must go for the throat of terror and step on their necks before they do the same to us.
