Voltaire said it best: “To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” But what really does that mean? Can you take it to mean that if you criticize someone they are going to hunt you down and kill you? For instance, does Jay Leno rule over me if I zing him and then he shows up at the door and punches me in the face? While that would be an amazing turn of events (I haven’t been punched by a celebrity in two or three years) that was not what Voltaire was getting at. Voltaire was telling the people, whomever you criticize to a point where the masses or government or police turn on you, that is the person who ultimately controls all of you.
That person does not have to issue an edict against bad speech, does not have to make a personal appearance, doesn’t have to make an example of you…they have no need of those things. Those people who rule have convinced the ruled that they are above ordinary men, are worthy somehow of an exceptional brand of deference and would be pleased if those not showing that deference were to be punished by the good followers of said ruler. Does that make sense to you? It is a culture of worship, hero or deity is doesn’t matter, so pervasive that criticism, satire, free-speech, etc must be stamped out in the name of “justice.”
Take for instance the rodeo clown out at the Missouri state fair. The guy wears an Obama mask, trots around in rodeo clown fashion, the announcer says a couple of off-color things. No I don’t mean racist, I mean who wants to see the pres get trampled, and shit like that. Suddenly the media, the darling social groups, and some others freak the f#$% out and this guy is banned for life. All clowns must now take sensitivity training. Are you kidding me, what the hell for, its is not like they burned the president in effigy, which when I think about it would also be legal, although distasteful, free speech. The DOJ should not even listen to the calls from the NCAA for an investigation/trial/witch hunt/burning over the mask. It was just a mask. But that is the problem.
No criticism is allowed with this president. None. If you dare mock, question, show an unacceptable level of deference, etc you are guilty. The punishment is political death, possible loss of your job, banning for life, possibly in the future arrest and imprisonment. You are ruled, and you have let it happen, kudos to you.
